Between Truth and Perception

Goshka Białek about the exhibition:

“Between Truth and Perception” explores how reality is shaped by the way we see it. The exhibition asks whether objective truth exists, or whether each of us creates our own version of it. Using transparent and semi-transparent materials such as glass, the sculptures reveal both the visible and the hidden, allowing conflicting meanings to coexist within a single object. The works invite viewers to reflect on how memory, emotion, and expectation influence what they perceive as “true.”

Symbols from different cultures — especially the ancient motif of the cross — appear throughout the exhibition. Once universal, later redefined, the cross becomes a starting point for asking whether a peaceful, inclusive symbol can exist today. Visitors are invited to create their own symbolic “crosses” and present them collectively. The exhibition offers no fixed answers. Instead, it becomes a small laboratory of perception — a space where each viewer can discover how fluid and personal truth really is".

Goshka Białek is a Polish-British sculptor and researcher working with transparent and semi-transparent materials to explore the use of internal space in sculpture. She currently divides her time between Warsaw and the medieval city of Durham in England, having previously lived in Edinburgh, Moscow, Hong Kong, and Hoon (Libya). She draws on both extensive travel and the deep local histories of the places she has visited to shape her artistic thinking.

She explores where truth lies, how it is perceived, and how we inherit myths about the past. In her fifties, Goshka unexpectedly discovered that she was adopted — a revelation that illuminated the origins of certain subconscious images in her work and reshaped her understanding of her own “truth.” In recent years, she has undergone a serious open-heart operation and was diagnosed with an aggressive form of eyelid cancer. These experiences have informed her most recent body of work.
