On March 27, 2025, Multikino will present the play "Hamlet" on the big screen at selected cinemas, featuring the legendary Ian McKellen in the title role. World Theatre Day – A Celebration for Theatre Lovers
World Theatre Day is celebrated annually on March 27. The holiday was established by the International Theatre Institute in 1961. The date commemorates the opening of the Theatre of Nations in Paris in 1957. The purpose of the day is to promote the art of theater. It also serves to bring together the global theater community. Each year, a distinguished figure from the theater world prepares a message, which is read before performances worldwide.
Ian McKellen as Hamlet
Ian McKellen – a titan of acting who can do it all. An icon of British theater and cinema, McKellen has played many iconic roles in Shakespeare’s classic plays. Besides Hamlet, he has portrayed Romeo, Macbeth, Coriolanus, and King Lear. He is also well known to global audiences for his roles in major film franchises (Gandalf in "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" and Magneto in the "X-Men" series). For his achievements, not only as an actor, McKellen has won the admiration of audiences and received prestigious awards (Tony, Golden Globe, and six Laurence Olivier Awards). Now, he returns after years to the role of Hamlet in a production directed by Sean Mathias. The performance has received enthusiastic praise from critics. McKellen proves that age is no obstacle to creating outstanding roles.
A Hamlet Like No Other
At the empty Windsor Royal Theatre, due to the pandemic, ghosts appear, including the ghost of Hamlet’s father, to remind the world, lost in chaos, and his son of the indestructible power of revenge and theater...
"Hamlet" is one of the most famous tragedies by William Shakespeare. The almost outrageous idea of casting an 85-year-old actor in the role of the young Danish prince offers a completely new perspective on Shakespeare’s most famous play. The decision by the directors to transform the Elsinore setting into various spaces of the Theatre Royal Windsor – the stage, backstage, dressing rooms, the audience, and theater corridors – reflects a deep respect for the greatest playwright of all time, who believed that the world is but a stage. This is a "Hamlet" like no other: gripping, unconventional, original, yet still faithful to Shakespeare and his views on theater and the human condition in the face of personal tragedy.
