Shakespeare Lives:The premiere of ‘Macbeth’ at the Grand Theatre in Poznań
Friday 21 October 2016 - 19:00 to Saturday 26 November 2016 - 22:00
Teatr Wielki w Poznaniu

The British Council and Teatr Wielki w Poznaniu present Macbeth  an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi.

Macbeth is Verdi’s first opera based on Shakespeare's play. It is a bloody tale of power’s allure. Power is a great force, but one that turns against its wielder when improperly handled. Macbeth is considered Verdi’s first great opera, which is owed to Francesco Maria Piave’s ingenious libretto and the immensely dramatic music.

‘This tragedy is one of mankind’s greatest creations!’ Shakespeare’s Macbeth stimulated Verdi’s musical development towards music theatre with solid dramaturgical foundations. The young British-French director Olivier Fredj conceives this work as one long nightmare full of raging passions, terror, and lust for power. The mysterious strangeness surrounding Macbeth is deepened by Jean Lecointre’s digital collage, which forms the basis for the stage design. Macbeth as a surrealist nightmare.
