Some voices are impossible to mistake for anyone else’s. PEM’s voice — slightly rough, trembling, intimate, yet somehow seeming to come from somewhere far away — stays with you from the very first notes.

PEM, aka Emily Perry, is one of the most intriguing new artists on the British alternative scene. The Guardian described her as “one to watch” — someone worth keeping a close eye on. Though in her case, perhaps it would be better to say: someone worth listening to closely.

Her music grows out of simple things: guitar, piano, voice, short melodies recorded in everyday moments — even while working in the garden. PEM is not only a songwriter, but also a gardener. And you can genuinely hear it in her music: there is a sense of nature, silence, memory, grief and the changing seasons running through her songs.

Her EP cloud work, written after the death of her father, brought her international attention. It is delicate music, but never fragile; ethereal, yet full of weight. Somewhere between folk, soul, alternative balladry and something more mysterious — with echoes of Nick Drake, Vashti Bunyan, Cocteau Twins and Björk.

On stage, PEM remains singular, focused and slightly elusive. Her hypnotic voice and quiet presence create a particular tension, as if everything were fragile, yet held together with extraordinary precision. 

It will be an intimate evening for those who like their music quiet, strange, beautiful and not entirely tame.
